The Ventura dog park is a great place for your pet to go and socialize with his/her peers. The park is split up into two sections: a small dog park, and a big dog park; however, the two parks are not equal in size. The big dog park is shaded by many trees. There are two picnic benches, and three benches to sit at. The park is completely fenced in; so you don’t have to worry about your dog getting out. There are doggie bags provided for the owners to pick up after their pets; these are located at the entrance to the dog park. The park has a grass section, which is located in the rear of the dog park, and there is dirt and wood chips in the other half of the park. One of the drawbacks of this park is that there is only one dog fountain; so those who go into the little dog park will have to either bring their own water or go into big dog park to give their dog water. The small dog park is quite small. There is no shade. There is only one bench in there, and that’s it. However, it is all grass.

For small dog owners you need to consider if this park is the right fit for you. If you just want to take your dog to the small dog park okay, but you have to consider the liabilities before taking your small dog into the big dog park. Some large dogs do not know how to play with little dogs properly, and can end up playing too rough. Also, some large dogs just don’t like little dogs, and you run the risk of your dog getting attacked. I’m not saying that if you have a little dog that you should never take it in with the big dogs, but I am saying that you need to be cautious and vigilant, in order to protect your dog. There are many other dog parks, which have wonderful small dog parks; so you might consider going to one of those parks.

Recently, at another dog park, I witnessed a dog fight between a Chihuahua and a Golden Retriever. The little dog came into the park barking, jumping up on the other dogs, and just plain being obnoxious. It bit at the Golden Retriever, and he picked up the little dog in his mouth like it was a sausage. He did not hurt the dog, but he definitely scared the little dog, who laid down in a submissive position after the Golden put him down. It didn’t help matters that the lady was hysterical throughout the ordeal; when the Chihuahua’s owner went to pick up her dog it bit her. There were other small dogs in the park, and the Golden Retriever was perfectly fine with them; so you have to realize that not all dogs’ energies are going to jive. Bigger dogs will be able to defend themselves against another big dog, but small dogs don’t really have a chance. What the hysterical lady did not know was that the Golden Retriever had been bit on the foot by a little dog on a previous trip to the dog park, and he bled considerably from it. I’m not saying that the big dog’s owners were not at fault in this situation; I’m just saying that if you know that your little dog does not get along well with bigger dogs then you should not bring your dog to a mixed dog park. Everyone has to take responsibility for the actions of their animals, and do what is in their best interest not in the best interest of the human.

Camino Real Park is a great place for your entire family. There are tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer and baseball fields, and picnic areas where you can have a picnic or throw a party. There are three different playgrounds, each gearing towards a different age group. There are nice walking paths, most of which are shaded. There is a regular maintenance crew that is always somewhere in the park. They have a concession stand for when there are little league games and such. There are two bathroom facilities, one on either side of the park.
